What is a Datil Pepper?
- Small yellowish-orange pepper found abundantly in St. Augustine, Florida.
- Exact origins are unknown, adding to the mystery surrounding the Datil Pepper.
- The Minorcans who came to America as indentured servants claim to have brought them from the island of Minorca.
- Another theory is that they originated in Africa since they resemble the African Fataliii pepper.
- The earliest mention of datil peppers in Florida is from 1880 by S.D. Valls, a jelly maker who came from Chile.
- Datil Peppers have a heat level similar to the habanero – 100,000-300,000 on the Scoville heat scale for peppers.
- Datil Peppers have a sweet, fruity flavor with a latent kick of heat.
- Sweet varieties of Datil Peppers have been cultivated which are red when ripe and have little to no heat at all.
